Kicking the Blocker in Oregon

The imperious speaker of the Oregon House may not have gotten away with blocking consideration of civil unions in July. Gay-rights groups there will target Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village), who just narrowly won her seat in the previous election.

According to the AP
, the state's largest gay-rights group, Basic Rights Oregon, has already hosted a Stick It To Minnis fund raider. Proceeds will go to unseating her.

With so many right-wingers screaming for anything but court action forcing same-sex marriage or civil-unions, it is particularly ironic that Minnis refused the let her House even vote. Apparently, they would have gone for civil unions. Democracy? She don't need no stinkin' democracy!

She remains unapologetic about not allowing a vote. She says that she had said along she wouldn't.

Civil unions are likly to come up again next term (2007).
